Background

Chick sales are intended to promote the heritage genetic lines in backyard flocks, increase education regarding the raising of chickens in Alberta, and help to continue the breeding program at the University of Alberta South Campus Poultry Research Centre.

Our chick program began in 2014.  With the help of Peavey Mart in Leduc and Spruce Grove we ran a chick sale pilot project.  We placed 100 chicks in both stores, and Peavey Mart donated 30 pairs of boots to the Poultry Research Centre. The chick sale pilot project was deemed a success and in 2015 the program was expanded reaching 17 Peavey Marts across Alberta delivering a total of 5700 chicks.  An educational component was added and two small flock workshops were offered in Edmonton and Lacombe. In 2016, the chick program delivered 7000 chicks to participating Peavey Marts across Alberta and piloted Regina and Kamloops.
